Proposal, Data Collection & Visual Design
Instructions
We are to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture and study within a chosen theme to convey our own interpretation of the particular culture without altering the actual facts of the culture. The general theme given is "Visualism - Visual Culture".
We should produce a minimum of three preliminary ideas to visually express our interpretation of the culture we studied using design language. We are suggested to conduct the design in any digital form creatively. Each idea is to be supported by 200 words of rationale.
We have decided to do a Mehndi Art and have conducted preliminary research on our ideas.

Manhaidi tattoo is a kind of body art widely accepted by different cultures in the world, which has rich historical and cultural significance. Haitian tattoos are not only beautiful body decoration, but also gradually given some special cultural significance in long-term use. Flowers are the most common motif in Henna's tattoos, symbolizing joy and happiness.
Promote ManHaitian tattoo art. Integrating the art of different countries can be better accepted by people. So I incorporated the Chinese lotus pattern, which is a common pattern in traditional Chinese art and has profound cultural and symbolic significance. In China, the lotus pattern is also a symbol of bravery and love.
I designed a pattern combining Manhaidi tattoo and Chinese lotus pattern, and applied it to the back of my hand. I hope that through this traditional painting method, people can better experience the unique charm of Manhaidi tattoo in their daily life, experience the integration of different cultures, and stimulate people's interest in Manhaidi tattoo culture. Be able to understand and explore.

3.Field Study
We group members visited a specialized shop that designs henna tattoos and experienced the process of creating henna tattoos firsthand. After closely observing the techniques used in henna tattooing, also engaged in in-depth conversations with the tattoo artists, discussing their sources of inspiration and technical details. During this time, we group members documented a variety of patterns, ranging from traditional designs to modern styles, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of the art of henna tattoos.
Final Project: Visual Design (my part)
I design two works , and we choice the second one.
In my design, I used the traditional motifs of mehndi and matched them with colors suitable for these motifs. At the same time, I made some innovations so that our design could look new without deviating from the theme. The colors of the first design are more vibrant, while the second design is less saturated and more in line with mehndi's colors.
Visual Design Ideas:
- Cup
- Phone Case
- Shirt
- Nail Design
This fake nail’s design has included the traditional Mehndi design, contemporary Mehndi design and diversity Mehndi design. Also, this design has retained the traditional Mehndi art symbols and also adding the modernise symbols at the same time. We considered the combination of Mehndi art with nail design to get a new method of how to incorporate the traditional kinds of body art into our modern lives. This procedure implies the preparation of nail art designed with details similar to the elements of a standard Mehndi design but with a reduced amount on the nail to make sure the culture is not offended and the design is customized for the client.
This is our sketches for the nails design.
The reason we chose nail design is because it has been very popular nowadays. Our target audience is women as well as most women are into nail design. In addition, we could take this chance to promote Mehndi to let more people know about Mehndi and dive deeper into Mehndi.
Our group came out with two different styles of designs. We decided to choose figure 9 as our final design.
Figure below show our group's poster.

Reflection
- Experience
This course allowed me to experience the mode of group work more. We got along very happily and harmoniously. We discussed and solved problems together. At the beginning, we did not know how to find the theme, but after discussion, we overturned the original theme, because it did not meet the theme of this course. The following tasks were carried out smoothly
Through this course, we can get to know those cultures that we have not known and come into contact with. This is also the purpose of this course, so that students from different countries can communicate and discuss together, enhance the understanding and tolerance of culture in work, and broaden our cultural knowledge. I had never known the Mehndi culture, so this was a great opportunity for me.
- Observation
In our observation, we found that there are many kinds of Mehndi patterns, and each pattern has its own significance. Mehndi's culture and history are also very profound, and it is worth our continuous exploration. This culture is very popular in Southeast Asian countries. We also observed that the combination of Mehndi and modern culture, with both traditional patterns and parts of modern culture, is loved by people, and its design is unique, and the flowers of Mehndi are beautiful. Our team found in the work that its pattern can be designed on any item to make it more beautiful and more distinctive. I should learn this from my members, who have many good ideas.
- Findings
In my opinion, Mehndi culture has a long and free history, expressing its own unique culture and forms of expression.
There is no denying that communication is the most important thing in team work. However, when we tried to discuss and present our ideas to others, we worked surprisingly well together. In addition, we do not have the seniors of other semesters, which I think is also one of the deficiencies of our group, our views and perspectives are narrow and insufficient.
