Task 1

INSTRUCTION

LECTURES

Week 1 : Briefing about the modules, system to organized the class, retrieval of notes and lecture video links and task 1 to 3. Besides that, Ms. Yip also remind us about the add/drop module cut-off date.
Visual communication involves using design to convey purposeful messages to a target audience, requiring thorough planning and execution, and understanding and applying design elements and principles is crucial.

2.Recap the design principle listed below
Gestalt  theory  :The human brain is wired to see patterns, logic, structure.“Gestalt” refers to “shape” or “form” in German.

  •  Contrast :Contrast is the juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements.

  • Emphasis : Emphasis can create dominance and focus in a design work. It is a design technique that emphasises a particular element

  • Balance:Balance in design refers to the distribution of visual weight. It is the visual equilibrium of the elements that ensure a balanced image.

  •  Repetition:Repetition in design creates rhythm and pattern, making a work appear active. Besides that, variety is essential to keep rhythms exciting and active and to avoid monotony.

  •  Movement :Movement or motion in a visual image refers to the way a design leads the eye in, around, and through a composition—the path the eye follows. The appearance of the objects moving is due to the use of shapes, forms, lines, and curves.

  •  Harmony&Unity:Harmony in design involves selecting elements with common traits. It ensures they fit together and align with the same theme, aesthetic style, or mood.

  •  Symbol:A symbol is a sign, shape, or object used to represent something else and can convey information equivalent to one or more sentences of text or a whole story.

  •  Word and Image:Imagery is crucial in print design or digital design. It allows users to relate to concepts or brands. Choosing the right words and typefaces deepens the meaning of a design.

            3. Select UNSDG Goal
Based on the instruction that given by Ms. Yip on briefing day, I have make some research and decided the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) that I choose for the further exploration.

The UNSDG that I choose is the 14th goals which is "Life Below Water".

The ocean covers nearly three-quarters of the earth's surface, accounting for 97% of the earth's total water resources.
The livelihood of more than 3 billion people depends on a variety of marine and coastal organisms.
The market value of marine and coastal resources and industries is estimated to reach 3 trillion US dollars per year, accounting for about 5% of global GDP.
At present, there are nearly 200,000 species of marine life known, and the actual number is expected to be tens of millions.
The ocean absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide generated by human activities, which buffers global warming.
The ocean contains the world's largest protein resources, for more than 3 billion people provide protein.
Marine fisheries directly or indirectly employ more than 200 million people.
Fisheries subsidies have led to the extinction of many fish species, and at the same time, it is not conducive to the revitalisation of global fisheries and related work, resulting in the annual loss of marine fishery production by $50 billion than expected.
The high seas site shows that the acidity level of seawater has increased by 26% since the beginning of the first industrial revolution.
Due to pollution and eutrophication, coastal waters are gradually deteriorating.

            4. Select Design Work

Selected existing art/design work that revolves around that goal of your choice. Beneath the image, include the credit line of the art/design work (title of art/design work, artist’s/designer’s name, year, size, medium, source link). Some works may not have all these but provide as complete as possible.

Below is the existing work of art/ design I have chosen for this task:

            Fig 2.1 Sea Of All
            Designer: Melani Pyke
            Size:45.72W x 60.96H x 3.81D cm,
            Medium:Original Art Oil/Acrylic Painting

5.Explanation For Selecting The Work Of Design

Explain, in about 100-150 words, why you chose that design in relation to the UNSDG goal and list the design principles you observed in that design.

I choose the design because it has a strong sense of design and is very novel and it is related to 14UNSDG. The title is"sea of all painting or print of hands dripping water into ocea".The design expressed that using water and hands as metaphor, this piece symbolizes hope for humanity. There are many hands in this picture, some of which are piled up at the bottom of the sea and some of them in the sky. The designer expresses it with repeated shapes means anyone can do a simple act of sharing and make a positive impact on the world. Although the sea of need may seem endless, with faith and love one can make a difference. The palms piled up at the bottom of the sea symbolize the bodies of undersea creatures. It comforms to the theme of life below water. The design principles that I found in the design are emphasis, repetition, hierarvhy, alignment.
