Introduction

Exercises

Week1

Exercise 1: Quantify and visualize data

The First Week

For our first exercise, we will quantify (count) our selection of coins, buttons, or pieces of Lego and arrange them into a presentable layout or chart.

For this exercise, I chose different colored m beans and grouped them on a3 paper according to the color. After the professor's reminder, I need to think about a general arrangement first, rather than random placement without reference. So I went to printerest and looked up examples of permutations and made my first draft.

After making this draft, I didn't think it meant anything, and I wasn't happy with this draft, so I found another arrangement that would express the story I wanted to show.

Exercise 2 - L.A.T.C.H

In exercise 2, we have to organize a group of information into a visual poster that combines and utilizes the LATCH principles (Minimum 4). We are required to use the digital photo editing/illustration software available to assemble the information into a LATCH infographic poster. We are allowed to reuse back the images but we do have to create the rest of your visuals to complete the poster.

Size resolution: A4 size

I decided to start with the IP Harry Potter that I was more familiar with, and according to LATCH principles, I first listed the information that I wanted to include in the infographic poster.

Information

L.A.T.C.H

L  (Location): Top view of Hogwarts and key area markers
A  (Alphabet): Key characters are listed in alphabetical order
T  (Time): Lists the dates of major events according to nodes on ancient magic sticks
C  (Category): Classification of the wizarding world
H(Hierarchy):Create a magical power structure with a tree structure

Visual reference
After listing this information, I went to Pinterest and found some infographics to use as a visual reference. At first, I didn't know how to arrange the information. I then searched for other types of infographics, such as geographic infographics, and I realized that there are several ways to arrange the information.

Sketches

After doing research on visual references, I started to draw the sketches.

In the end I decided to use the third draft and made some minor adjustments.

Digitisation

I first put the overhead map in the center to highlight the key points, and then listed the information in different sections of the poster

In the second attempt, I rearranged and resized the information in order of importance and adjusted the font to make it more relevant to the topic

In the third attempt, I tweaked the font sizes in the Hierarchy to make them look sharper

Reflection

Creating quantifiable data is essential for clearly expressing the data. We need to transform data and information into visual representations. Information graphics are mainly used to express very complex and large amounts of information. When designed properly, infographics are a powerful communication and presentation tool. Infographics present data in a concise and highly intuitive way.
